SPROG DCC Installation Instructions

Thank you for purchasing a product from the SPROG family, The DCC Decoder Programmer.

Please take the time to read through these instructions fully before attempting to install or use your SPROG.

The following steps are required to install your SPROG before you can use it for the first time:

  • Install the Java Runtime Environment (JRE) if not already on your system
  • Install JMRI including DecoderPro and PanelPro
  • Connect the Power Supply
  • Install SPROG II or SPROG3 USB drivers (if required)
  • Edit DecoderPro Preferences
  • Connect the Programming Track

These instructions provide full steps for the Windows, MacOS or Raspberry Pi OS operating systems but the same basic principles apply to other Linux distributions.
Specific instructions are included for Raspberry Pi 4B (or 3B+) running Bullseye or Pi 5 Bookworm.

Before you begin you will need:
  • A SPROG II, SPROG 3, SPROG Nano or Pi-SPROG 3, and appropriate computer conection (typically USB cable supplied)
  • A 12-18V regulated DC power supply (as supplied, 12V 1A (SPROG II) or 15V 3A (SPROG 3 or Pi-SPROG), not required for Nano)
  • Java 17 Runtime software (download link here)
  • JMRI software (included here on the later pages, or USB Flash drive (order separately))
  • USB drivers if needed (included here on later pages, or USB Flash drive (order separately))
Note: To read some of the installation instructions and manuals, you will require Adobe Acrobat Reader to be installed on your system.
Most computers have this or an equivalent Reader, but if you do not already have Acrobat Reader installed, it may be installed from here:

Before you can use your SPROG for the first time you need to install a number of software components.
SPROG software requires the Java runtime environment (JRE) version 11 or 17 and JMRI, which includes DecoderPro.
In addition, the USB SPROG device may require specific USB drivers to be installed.
